New Delhi: Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced a phased rollout of the three-language formula from Class VI and the introduction of a two-tier system in mathematics and science for Class IX, to be implemented from the 2026–27 academic session, officials said.Officials said that language learning will follow a structured three-language model organised into stages—R1, R2, and R3. As recommended by the National Curriculum Framework under National Education Policy, at least two of the three languages must be Indian. Continuing its phased approach to multilingual education, CBSE will make a third language mandatory from Class VI, ensuring that each student studies at least two Indian languages.A significant change will also be introduced in mathematics and science through a two-level system from the same academic session. All students will study the standard curriculum and sit for a common three-hour examination carrying 80 marks. Those seeking greater proficiency may opt for an additional advanced level in one or both subjects.The advanced component will involve a separate one-hour examination carrying 25 marks, aimed at assessing higher-order thinking and deeper conceptual understanding. While the standard examination is compulsory, the advanced paper will be optional. Officials clarified that marks from the advanced paper will not be included in the overall aggregate; instead, students who score 50% or above will have this achievement recorded separately on their mark sheets.
