Lindsey Vonn is one of the most famous ski racers the United States has ever produced. Now, at 41 years old, she is once again in the middle of a tough moment in her life. Last month, the Olympic champion suffered a frightening crash during the Winter Olympics in Italy. The accident was so serious that doctors feared she could lose her left leg. Lindsey Vonn was airlifted to a hospital and had to go through several surgeries before she was finally allowed to return home to the United States.Because of how serious the injury looked, many people on social media quickly assumed that her skiing career was finally over. Some fans even wrote messages telling her it was time to stop racing. But Lindsey Vonn made it very clear that the decision about her future belongs to her alone. Over the weekend, she shared an emotional message online and pushed back at critics who were already talking about her retirement. She said her focus right now is not racing or making big decisions. Instead, she is working day by day just to recover from the injury and return to normal life.
Lindsey Vonn responds to retirement talk after severe Winter Olympics crash and explains why only she will decide her skiing future
The debate began when one social media user wrote as if Lindsey Vonn’s skiing days were already finished. The Olympic champion replied directly.“Who said I was retiring?” Lindsey Vonn wrote.Another user then responded with a harsh comment, saying she should stop racing after nearly losing her leg. Lindsey Vonn calmly answered back.“Think you’re mistaking ego for joy. I’ve said it my whole life; I love skiing. I’ll put my feet up when I’m good and ready thank you.”Soon after, Lindsey Vonn posted a longer message explaining where her mind is right now.“No, I’m not ready to discuss my future in skiing. My focus has been on recovering from my injury and getting back to normal life. I was already retired for six years and have an amazing life outside of skiing.”She also reminded fans that she had achieved something special recently.“It was incredible to be number one in the world again at 41 years old and set new records in my sport, but at my age, I’m the only one that will decide my future. I don’t need anyone’s permission to do what makes me happy.”However, her own family has also worried about her continuing. Her father, Alan Kidow, spoke about the crash in an interview with the Associated Press.“She’s 41 years old and this is the end of her career,” Alan Kidow said. “There will be no more ski races for Lindsey Vonn, as long as I have anything to say about it.”After returning to the United States in late February, Lindsey Vonn shared more details about the injury. She explained that she suffered a complex tibia fracture along with other damage in the leg. Doctors also had to treat Compartment Syndrome, a dangerous condition where pressure builds up inside muscles. To save her leg, surgeons performed a six-hour operation. She said the procedure was needed so the leg would not have to be amputated.“I had a complex tibia fracture… everything was in pieces,” Lindsey Vonn said. “It has been the most extreme and painful injury I’ve ever faced.”Adding to the challenge, she also tore her Anterior Cruciate Ligament just days before the Olympic crash. That injury will likely require another surgery in the future. For now, Lindsey Vonn says the only thing that matters is healing. The question about racing again will come later.
