BENGALURU: A magistrate court recently held a 28-year-old driver of a mini goods vehicle guilty of causing the death of an auto driver in a road accident and sentenced him to undergo 3 months’ simple imprisonment, with a fine of Rs 3,000.The convict was identified as M Rehman Saab, a resident of Laggere. Rehman was driving back home when his vehicle rear-ended the autorickshaw driven by Yogesh SN, 19, of Jai Marutinagar, near Laggere bridge, Nandini Layout, around 11.40 pm on May 3, 2023.Due to the collision, Yogesh and his friend Ningaraju were thrown out of the vehicle, and Yogesh later succumbed to his head injuries. Ningaraju recovered. Jurisdictional Rajajinagar traffic police charge-sheeted Rehman under the then Indian Penal Code sections 279 (rash and negligent driving) and 304A (causing death due to negligence).Assistant public prosecutor Girija Shankar told TOI that statements by eyewitnesses to the accident and the documents produced by investigating officers helped clinch the conviction. “Around 4 eyewitnesses made their statements, which were corroborated with documents like the spot mahazar. The investigating officer recorded the details of the accident with the required sketches. Also, the police took the confession statement from the then accused Rehman, which also played a vital role,” Girija Shankar said.
